Wireless Security Measures
Security is an issue for any network with wireless access - and almost any network can have wireless access. Here, from ComputerWorld, are 10 tips for securing a wireless network:
1. Use the vendor's security - the maker of the gear ought to know best how to secure it.
2. Change the default administrative password of your wireless link.
3. Turn down the power - don't broadcast your wireless signal farther than it needs to go.
4. Use Media Access Control address filtering and Wired Equivalent Privacy, with a key that's hard to guess.
5. Ask your vendor about positioning your antenna.
6. Change your Service Set Identifier or disable its broadcast if possible.
7. Keep your wireless access/router/bridge up to date.
8. Use a Virtual Private Network for access from homes.
9. Keep your anti-virus program up to date.
10. Use a firewall.
