Hot Tip: Control Mobile

As mobile devices become more common and more used in the workplace, dangers of losing data increase. It's easy for mobile devices to get lost or stolen or to have data pilfered.

But most companies still have poorly defined security rules for such items. Many firms aren't even aware of all the dangers -- a tiny USB gadget can be secretly plugged into a smart phone, for instance, and drain data in seconds.

"What we see is an ill-defined policy regarding devices," says Dan Croft, president and CEO of Mission Critical Wireless, which specializes in mobile deployments.

Here are some tips compiled by ComputerWorld from experts:

  1. Secure and manage every device, whether it's company-issued or private unit used on company networks. Standardize devices where possible to make securing them easier.
  2. Manage every connection. Make certain every connection is secure, with updated anti-virus programs.
  3. Protect every piece of data. Use encryption and use encryptable removable storage devices.
  4. Educate users. "The greatest vulnerability is human," one expert said. Users might be alert not to loan laptop computers, but less aware of the danger of letting someone use a smartphone.
