Developing A Comprehensive Technology Disaster Plan

A Comprehensive Technology Disaster Plan provides detailed step-by-step recommendations customized to your organization. The recommendations are compiled after an in-depth analysis of the current technology infrastructure is reconciled with the operational requirements of the organization. The individual recommendations are structured to provide a progressive course of action to facilitate continuous business operations during normal work activities and to provide orderly business resumption plans in the event of a catastrophic event.

The first phase of the Comprehensive Technology Plan is Assessment. During the assessment phase your technology team should perform a detailed analysis of your current technology infrastructure including dumb terminals; printers; personal computers; servers; core system mainframe; networking hardware; hand-held computers; operating systems; application software; core system software; telephone systems; auxiliary systems and software. The assessment is broken down into five categories, which are:

Management and Administration Networking Hardware and Software Infrastructure Server(s) Hardware and Software Personal Computer(s) Hardware and Software Telecommunications Systems and Telephone Integration This analysis provides the initial baseline inventory snapshot for the recommendations. See the Assessment Outline below for a more detailed description of the items reviewed during an assessment.

The second phase of the plan is Discovery. Interviews are conducted to determine what functions are performed within workgroups. These interviews help to identify areas and functions that are requirements to maintain business continuity. This provides the mission critical listing of functions and tasks that must be covered by the plan.

The third phase of the plan is Compilation. During the compilation phase the technology team develops the actual recommendations for your organization. Setting your present technology and job functions as the initial baseline and your mission critical and mission necessary requirements as the ultimate goal, our staff develops step-by-step recommendations for your business. Each recommendation is carefully crafted to help your organization maintain its business continuity.

The fourth phase of the plan is Presentation. During the presentation phase the technology team presents the recommendations to your organization’s management. The presentation should be performed in person to facilitate a question and answer session and to clarify the more technically complex details. The presentation includes the step-by-step recommendations to achieve identified goals; block diagrams that depict current and planned strategies and technologies; and implementation plans, costs and anticipated implementation timeframes. Printed and bound booklets of the presentation are prepared for each of your organization’s representative in the meeting.

The drawing below depicts the entire Comprehensive Technology Disaster Plan process. First the baseline is established, and then the business requirements are identified. The recommendations are made and finally the individual steps are implemented to achieve the desired results.

The drawing below depicts the process for each Mission Critical or Mission Necessary function:

Assessment Outline
